I appreciate that Lego is trying to be environmentally friendly but the new minifigures
Coming out 9/1 will be in boxes and we won’t be able to go to the store to feel
out the bags. I emailed Lego and they said no returns on any open boxes and
there will not be a code on the box to determine which figure is in it.

I have an issue with this as Lego fans will be buying box after box looking for
a specific figure. Anyone have any suggestions?

You could buy opened and identified figures on bricklink.

The point of the entire Collectors Series is not to know what's in the package
when you buy it. They just finally got to the solution that actually achieves
this.

Funny, if was a car collector and was looking for a specific Ford Mustang, would
I buy a blind container which might contain my 'last to complete my wanted
list' ?
I think I wouldn't.
It has some charm around it, but if you are keen on completing a set, you end
up spending far more money on buying the wrong items in this way.

That's the nature of all "blind bag" items - it doesn't compare
to purchasing a car. It's a gamble. It's the same thing with trading
cards. If anything, LEGO figures have been *mostly* far more fair in the sense
that often a box includes at least 2 full sets (depending on the series), and
almost no chase or very rare figures with the exception of Mr. Gold. Even the
Percival Graves figure was guaranteed in the box. MTG/Pokemon cards do not have
that same kind of guarantee in a box.

And if you want to go a step further, it's the same reason why the video
games industry has a battle about blind boxes there. Many countries have banned
the sale of these kinds of items because it's considered a type of gambling
and often targets children.

Car collectors have experienced a similar dilemma...

When I first opened my case I wasn't really sure how I was supposed to open
them, but I opened the sides and it was pretty easy. I don't know if I can
really go with Tran's premise, though. The bags could be opened in the store
too. Especially in a store that sells scissors. But it could be that people
opened the bags less because they were easier to conceal without opening.

Music to LEGO's ears.

I don't like blind pack stuff. It isn't fun for me. My daughters beg
for blind pack toys when we go to Walmart. *shrugs.

You think this is a decision driven by wanting to be more environmentally friendly?

All of these new boxes take up more volume than the foil packs and weigh more.
This means that more total volume is required to transport a given number of
minifigure/character packs, and the packaging itself weighs more per minifigure/character
pack. All of that leads to more fossil fuels being needed to ship that greater
volume and weight of product around the world.

On the other hand, cardboard packaging is _much_ cheaper to produce than plastic
packaging, the new packages come with the added benefit that buyers can't
tell what is inside anymore, and the company making the switch gets to wave its
"environmentally-friendly" flag for an increased perception of doing
the right thing. That's a win-win-win for the LEGO Group.

When the financial analysis on this decision was completed, I have a feeling
that the savings from switching the packaging material plus the additional profits
projected from buyers purchasing more to get what they want plus increased goodwill
capital was greater than the increased costs of transporting all of the new boxes.

The LEGO Group wants to make as much money as possible, plain and simple. After
all, the entire business is based on processing fossil fuels into the product
we all tirelessly gobble up.

Cheers,
Randy

But what about LEGO plant parts! They're made from plants!

Something about using real plants to make fake plants just seems odd to me…

Don't buy directly from Lego. Buy from big box stores or A, open and return
unwanted. Or sell extras on Bricklink.
